01SECTION
THE COURSE

A clear approach to wound management.

Work through the decisions that shape a good closure, from the initial assessment to aftercare.

  1. I.

    Assess

    Recognise contamination, tissue viability and possible deeper injury. Decide whether to close the wound or refer.

  2. II.

    Prepare

    Choose your anaesthetic, instruments and sutures. Practise wound preparation, irrigation, debridement and haemostasis.

  3. III.

    Perform

    Refine needle control, tissue handling and edge alignment. Practise simple interrupted, layered, subcuticular, running locked and mattress closures.

  4. IV.

    Troubleshoot

    Work through difficult edges, excess tension, bleeding and wound complications. Plan aftercare and recognise when further help is needed.

FORMAT

Small groups. Individual feedback.

A consultant plastic surgeon teaches each group of four, with time to watch your technique, explain adjustments and let you practise again. Bring the questions that come up in your own clinical work.

BEFORE YOU BOOK

Questions, answered.

  • The course is designed for clinicians with some suturing experience, including GPs and GP registrars, rural generalists, emergency clinicians, junior doctors and surgical trainees. You should have used a needle holder and placed sutures before attending.

  • You can use the day to refine your technique, work through difficult closures and discuss your decisions with faculty. Cases are adapted to the group's experience.

  • Synthetic skin and wound pads. There are no procedures on patients or other participants.

  • RACGP and ACRRM accreditation is in progress and has not yet been confirmed. A certificate of completion is included.

  • No. Instruments, sutures and practice materials are provided.

  • Cancellations more than 30 days before the course are refunded less an A$95 fee. Places may be transferred to another eligible clinician. Please read the full cancellation policy before reserving.
